Special Inspection: Fire Alarm Systems Test
Code Section(s): BC 907
Minimum Qualifications: Primary Inspector or Inspection Supervisor. 

  • PE- Electrical or Fire Protection; and
  • 1 year relevant experience OR
  • Licensed electrician independent of installer; and
  • 3 years relevant experience.

  • Not Applicable.
Supplemental Inspector (Alternative 2)

  • Technician with NICET Level II Certification in Fire Alarm Systems.

Inspection Task: Inspection Interval (Continuous/Peri odic) NYC Construction Code Reference Section Reference Standard (e.g. ASTM X1234) Baseline Document (Approved plans, Shop Drawings, Manufacturer’s Instructions, etc.) Comments (e.g. needs test performed by Approved Testing Agency)
1. Check for compliance with DOB approved plans. Periodic. BC 907.16 • DOB approved plans. • PE/RA of record approved equipment and material submittals. • Note: A special inspection is required for the fire alarm system when a FDNY inspection is not required.
2. Perform visual inspections and verify that the installations of all materials, fittings, hangers, assemblies, and signage complies with the installation standards. Periodic – during the erection of piping and prior to concealment. BC 907.16 NFPA 72 – Chapter 10 • PE/RA of record approved equipment and material submittals.
3. Complete performance testing and verification. Periodic- At completion of installation before sign off. BC 907.16 NFPA 72- Chapter 10.4 • DOB approved plans.

• PE/RA of record approved equipment and material submittals.

• All new systems shall be inspected and tested in accordance with NFPA 72- Chapter 10.

• Transmit all required forms and test results to the Fire Department and the Department of Buildings.

4. Reports and Filing Immediately after inspection and test is conducted and passed. BC 907.16 NFPA 72- Chapter 10.6 • DOB approved plans.

• PE/RA of record approved equipment and material submittals including a detail of procedures, methods to be used and items subject to testing.

• Complete report must include identification of all devices by manufacturer, nameplate data, design values, measured values and identification tag.

• A record of inspections and test shall be maintained until next test for one year thereafter.

5. Re-Acceptance Testing. Conducted after any modifications to the system or physical changes to the fire alarm system infrastructure. BC 907.16 NFPA 72- Chapter 10.4.1.2 • DOB approved plans.

• PE/RA of record approved equipment and material submittals including a detail of procedures, methods to be used and items subject to testing.

• Perform reacceptance testing in accordance with NFPA 72- Chapter 10.4.1.2.
